Quit Buggin’ Me: Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Infective Endocarditis and Baloxavir Marboxil for Uncomplicated Influenza

Andre Maddison, General Internal Medicine (GIM) fellow at Western University, is hosting this week’s episode on The Rounds Table alongside Mike Nicholson, clinical fellow in cystic fibrosis at the University of Toronto. Together they are covering antibiotic prophylaxis and incidence of infective endocarditis and baloxavir marboxil for uncomplicated influenza.

Influenza viruses are emerging resistance to current treatments. First, Mike covers an article on a new antiviral therapy, baloxavir marboxil that was studied in both a phase 2 and phase 3 trial. Researchers were assessing whether this antiviral is safe for uncomplicated influenza in adults and adolescents compared to placebo and oseltamivir. The researchers also reported on symptom relief and virologic endpoints.

Antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis remains unclear. The American Heart Association released guidelines for prescribing antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis in 2007. Andre covers a study on the data of antibiotic prophylaxis and admissions for infective endocarditis after release of these guidelines.

Next, the Good Stuff segment. Mike highlights an article on patient with cystic fibrosis and their experience with a new gene-modulating drug. Andre covers high-yield tips for management of patients with heart failure to address challenges that may be experienced by palliative care specialists.

Finally, we have our first special segment of this year. Sheliza and Emily interview Dr. Shelly Dev, critical care specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, on burnout in medicine.
